The real story behind this X update isn't about how the pie gets sliced — it's about who even gets a seat at the table.

Original Content Rewards goes live on September 8, replacing the old creator payout program that's been rewritten multiple times since Elon Musk took over. Creators under the old system can still earn through September 7 — meaning the entire rulebook flips overnight.

The new eligibility bar is spelled out in detail: creators need at least 500 verified followers, plus a minimum of 500,000 impressions from verified users on the Home Timeline over the past 90 days, among other requirements. Once qualified, earnings are calculated based on "qualified impressions" — unique views where Premium subscribers see the post on their Home Timeline with at least 50% of it visible on screen.

But the real crux of the update is how X defines "original content." The list includes original reporting and analysis, videos and photos creators shot themselves, self-made graphics or illustrations, and yes — memes count too. Simply replying to someone else's post or reposting content generally won't generate earnings. However, if a comment or reaction "adds meaningful content," it can still be counted as original — though exactly who decides that line, and how, hasn't been spelled out in detail.

X was pretty blunt about the motivation behind the overhaul: shift the focus away from gaming the system and chasing clicks, and back toward rewarding creators who actually bring something to the table. Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager for Creators, posted on X saying the new system is designed to reward people who contribute original ideas, expertise, and unique perspectives — not those who are simply best at exploiting the rules.

This marks yet another major shakeup to X's payout mechanism under Musk's leadership. No word yet on the actual revenue split or payout formula under the new system — that'll have to wait until it goes live on September 8.
