Arm Injury, Not the Role: Dave Bautista Steps In as Kratos in "God of War," Ryan Hurst Exits After Bicep Tear

An on-set accident just cost one actor the role of a "god of war." Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially announced that Dave Bautista will take over as Kratos in the live-action "God of War" series, replacing original lead Ryan Hurst.

Hurst was confirmed as Kratos back in January 2026, but tore his bicep while filming in Vancouver and now needs surgery—without a recast, resuming production could have been delayed all the way to 2027. With the switch, the production team plans to restart filming in Vancouver within the next few weeks—though the cost is that all of Hurst's completed Kratos footage will have to be reshot. Bautista, who already has action chops from "Guardians of the Galaxy," now takes on the job of rebuilding the role from scratch.

Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the live-action adaptation, which will be filmed back-to-back. The scripts are written by Ronald D. Moore through his Tall Ship Productions, with Moore also serving as showrunner. The story adapts the game's Norse mythology storyline: Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus (played by Callum Vinson) set out on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye—Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother—across a distant land.

The rest of the cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Ed Skrein as Baldur, along with Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, respectively. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.
