The fact that a century-old traditional bank is stepping in to custody Bitcoin and Ether for institutional clients is, in itself, a signal worth noting. Deutsche Bank has announced plans to launch a digital asset custody service in Europe this year, with the initial offering supporting only Bitcoin, Ether, and a select group of vetted stablecoins.
The word "initial" is worth paying attention to. Deutsche Bank isn't rolling out full-scale coverage right away — instead, it's starting with the two most established crypto assets by market cap and liquidity, and only a subset of stablecoins, with the rest of the lineup and timeline yet to be disclosed. This approach looks more like building out a compliance and risk-management framework first and expanding later, rather than rushing to fill out a full crypto asset menu.
The service is clearly aimed at institutional clients, with retail investors off the table for now. That's all the information available at this point — Deutsche Bank has yet to disclose further details such as the official launch date, fee structure, or whether the service will be tied into its existing wealth management or custody businesses.
