After Canceling Vegas Residency, Dolly Parton Reveals She's Exploring "Avatar Performances"

Now the country music icon has revealed an unexpected next move: she's exploring the possibility of appearing before fans as an "avatar performance."

In an interview with People, Parton said she and her team have already been in contact with several companies developing avatar performance technology, discussing new ways to keep delivering musical experiences to fans. She didn't reveal what form the avatar might take, only saying the concept is "still in early development."

The timing of these comments isn't exactly coincidental. Not long ago, Ozzy Osbourne's family announced they'd commissioned tech company Hyperreal to create an AI avatar of the heavy metal godfather, who passed away last summer at age 76. The news sparked immediate backlash from some fans, who accused the move of being a "cash grab." Sharon Osbourne fired back at critics, saying she didn't "need your damn money," while son Jack Osbourne stated on his own YouTube channel that the team's goal was to do it "tastefully" and that the avatar could never come across as "cheap."

For Parton, exploring avatar performances seems more about coping with physical realities than a marketing gimmick. Her husband Carl Dean, to whom she was married for 58 years, passed away last March. Since then, she's spoken publicly on multiple occasions about how grief has taken a toll on her physical health, describing herself as "worn down to a frazzle." After she postponed the Vegas show last October, her sister Freida asked fans on social media to pray for Dolly, sparking concern about her health — Freida later clarified that she "didn't mean to make it sound as serious" as people took it. Parton herself recorded a video on set for a Grand Ole Opry ad shoot to reassure fans: "I know y'all think I've been sicker than I've been lately. Do I look sick? I'm out here working hard."

This past March, she delivered a keynote speech at Dollywood — her first public appearance in months. "I've been worn out and tired from missing Carl and some other things," she said. "I needed some time to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But everything's fine, and it hasn't slowed me down."
