Genesis GV90 San Francisco Debut: The Pillarless Coach Doors Are This Electric SUV's Most Honest Ambition

Genesis chose San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts to unveil its all-new electric SUV, the GV90. The top-spec Neolun trim, with its pillarless Arch Gate coach doors and "moon jar"-inspired design, is the star of the show. It's expected to hit the U.S. market in 2027, with pricing still unannounced.

Genesis GV90 San Francisco Debut: The Pillarless Coach Doors Are This Electric SUV's Most Honest Ambition

Back in 1915, San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts hosted one of the world's most important art exhibitions. Over a century later, Genesis chose the very same building to hold the global debut of the GV90 — and the venue itself was a statement. This is the most visually striking vehicle Hyundai's luxury brand has produced in its ten-year history.

The GV90 is a fully electric SUV with massive proportions — more limousine than family hauler. Its silhouette calls to mind the top-tier Range Rover or the Maybach version of the Mercedes-Benz GLS. But what really turns heads is the optional Arch Gate coach doors on the top-spec Neolun trim: a pair of doors that dispense with the central B-pillar entirely, relying instead on complex power hinges and built-in structural reinforcements to match the safety of conventional doors.

Tedros Mengiste, Genesis's North America COO, described the GV90 as "a declaration of the brand's success over its first decade, and this platform is also the foundation for the next ten years." He emphasized that the brand "isn't chasing anyone else — we're a Korean brand with our own culture of hospitality, and once you experience it, you'll understand."

From moon jars to laser-etched headlights: Luc Donckerwolke's design by subtraction

The GV90's lines deliberately avoid flashy visual language: simple twin-ribbon taillights, a clean side profile, and headlights that glow through a jewel-like, narrow strip of light at the front. Genesis says this headlight system, called Wing Face Micro Lens Array, is an industry first, requiring a specialized laser-etching process to produce.

Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis's President and Chief Creative Officer (who previously led design for Lamborghini and Bentley under the Volkswagen Group), said: "The GV90 is the first car of Genesis's second generation, and we're confident in it. The design looks more extreme, but it's actually more pure — taking things away is what makes something truly pure." The car's sense of calm is reportedly inspired by traditional Korean white porcelain moon jars, which win over viewers through sheer simplicity of form. Step inside, though, and it's an entirely different story.

Among the several vehicles shipped from Seoul to California for the display, the one that most fully captured the brand's ambition was the so-called Neolun First Edition. Behind its clamshell coach doors sit four leather seats; at a standstill, the push of a button lets passengers rotate to face one another. The rear seats recline, with a generous workspace in between, and a partition separates the cabin from the cargo area. The show car's interior was finished in purple, though Genesis says more vibrant color options will be available.

For in-cabin entertainment, there's a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system paired with unusually large tweeters mounted on the dashboard. A feature called Virtual Venue can transform the cabin's acoustics to simulate the sound of Boston Symphony Hall or Wembley Stadium. At the center of the dashboard sits a 23.6-inch OLED display that integrates entertainment and driving information; when the vehicle is parked, this screen can rise an additional 3.5 inches out of the dash, turning into a sizeable television.

Other details include the brand's first heated front windshield and a roof-mounted airbag that deploys in the event of a rollover. According to highway safety experts, many rollover injuries occur when passengers are ejected through the sunroof — this feature is designed specifically to address that risk.

A 316-mile range is currently the most honest gap in this "mobile lounge"

The GV90 packs a 123.5 kWh battery good for 316 miles of range — noticeably conservative compared to some rivals in its class that push close to 500 miles. No test drives were arranged on site, so the vehicle's promised sense of quietness — a combination of all-electric power, a newly tuned electronic suspension, and cabin sound insulation — remains to be verified down the road. Brand executives also stayed tight-lipped on whether autonomous driving features will eventually be included, confirming only that parking assistance will be available.

Se Jin Ahn, head of Genesis Project Group 2, framed the GV90 as a pursuit of luxury that "makes every moment extraordinary," saying the team's guiding vision was "a lounge in motion." The GV90 will offer seating configurations ranging from four to seven occupants, along with a version with conventional doors, and is expected to arrive in the U.S. market sometime in 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced.
