Hayden Christensen on Live-Action 'Clone Wars': Portman, McGregor Both Want to Come Back

Hayden Christensen revealed on the Hey Jonas podcast that both Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman are interested in returning to Star Wars, raising the possibility that the "original gang" could bring the Clone Wars era to life in live-action.

Asked whether a series "purely about Anakin" could happen, Hayden Christensen didn't rule it out—instead he dropped a line that got fans buzzing: "You could get the original gang back together."

Discussing the upcoming second season of "Ahsoka" on the Hey Jonas podcast, Christensen first talked about how much fun he's had reinterpreting Anakin Skywalker outside the animated timeline in recent years. "One thing that's been fun for me is playing the character within the Clone Wars timeline, which is something that's been done in the animated world," he said. "That's interesting because it's such a different side of the character."

Host Kevin Jonas then pressed further, asking if fans might ever get a "pure Anakin solo series." Christensen's answer steered the conversation straight toward the possibility of a reunion among the three prequel leads: "I know Ewan McGregor really wants to do more. I've heard Natalie [Portman] really wants to come back too. And Sam Jackson," he said. "So you could get the original gang back together."

Christensen, Portman, and McGregor played Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, and Obi-Wan Kenobi respectively in the prequel trilogy, forming the franchise's core trio. McGregor and Christensen have already returned to their roles through the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series, with Christensen going further by continuing Anakin's storyline in "Ahsoka," where he's set to return for season two.

The animated "The Clone Wars" aired from 2008 to 2020, covering the pivotal war era between the prequel films—but with a voice cast different from the live-action movies. If a live-action version were to actually happen, it would mark the first time this era was handed back to the original cast.

Another interview clip adds even more drama to Christensen's road to becoming Anakin. In a 2024 interview with Empire, he revealed he'd heard that George Lucas had also considered Leonardo DiCaprio for the role at one point, which made him assume the part would never go to him. "Throughout the entire audition process, I told myself from day one that I wasn't going to get this role," he said. "I think that actually helped me a lot, because it let me relax completely. So the moment I actually got the part was a total surprise to me."

No official release date has been announced for "Ahsoka" season two, and the live-action Clone Wars project remains nothing more than Christensen's personal hope expressed in interviews—not an officially announced production.
