Hennessey Blackbird Sells Out in 4 Hours: 71 Units, $2.5 Million, and a Surprising Shift Toward Restraint

Hennessey's all-new Blackbird supercar sold out its remaining 11 units within 4 hours of its public debut at The Quail, completing the full run of 71 cars. Inspired by the SR-71 spy plane, this naturally aspirated V8 supercar's selling point is, surprisingly, a more restrained driving character than before.

Hennessey Blackbird Sells Out in 4 Hours: 71 Units, $2.5 Million, and a Surprising Shift Toward Restraint

71 units, sold out in 4 hours for the last 11 — this isn't the first time Hennessey has sold out a supercar in record time, but even the founder himself was caught off guard by how fast it happened.

The new car, named Blackbird, made its public debut last Friday at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering 2026 in Monterey, California, marking Hennessey Special Vehicles' second ground-up original supercar after the Venom F5. According to Supercar Blog, 60 of the 71 units had already been reserved before the show even opened, with the remaining 11 selling out entirely within 4 hours of the reveal. All told, it's been barely two weeks since the car's official launch.

"None of us expected the response to be this overwhelming," John Hennessey told the outlet. "Selling out this fast proves just how much the design resonates with people, and it shows our team really understands what supercar collectors actually care about."

It's worth noting that the Blackbird's rapid sellout can't be chalked up to scarcity alone — the limited run of 71 units doesn't tell the whole story. Named after and visually inspired by the Lockheed Martin SR-71 "Blackbird" spy plane, this supercar takes a noticeably different development direction from Hennessey's past work: the body is primarily built from carbon fiber with an emphasis on sculptural lines; the cockpit ditches touchscreens in favor of analog gauges and physical buttons; and the powertrain moves away from the brand's signature over-the-top turbocharged brutality, instead relying on a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. Even so, the engine still puts out up to 900 horsepower, revs to 9,000 rpm, and delivers a 0-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 220 mph.

In other words, the Blackbird's driving philosophy has been described as leaning more toward comfort rather than the pure, aggressive edge-of-the-limit setup Hennessey has favored in the past — a notable shift in direction for the brand's lineup.

The Blackbird starts at $2.5 million, a price tag that clearly hasn't scared off buyers. Under the current timeline, deliveries are expected to begin sometime between 2029 and 2030.
