The Keyblade in the silhouette looks familiar, but the person holding it has fans arguing. At the latest D23 fan event, Disney announced an animated series adapted from "Kingdom Hearts," set to launch "soon" on Disney+ and Disney Channel. The teaser footage released only showed a single character silhouette, and many fans immediately felt it wasn't Sora, the protagonist of the game series.
Disney has not yet revealed detailed setting information, episode count, or air date for the animated series, only stating that it will be an "entirely new story" that builds on the existing series' storyline while "paying tribute to the game's characters." In other words, this isn't a direct animated adaptation of 16 years of game lore, but rather a separate timeline or perspective—as for who exactly the mysterious character holding the Keyblade is, Disney has not directly answered, leaving fans to speculate on their own.
For longtime players, the phrase "original story" inevitably raises some concern, especially since "Kingdom Hearts" is already known for its notoriously complex lore. However, Disney emphasized this time that the animation is being co-developed with Tetsuya Nomura—the series' director and character designer—who has also brought in the original creative team from Square Enix for this project. With Nomura at the helm, at least in terms of character interpretation and art direction, the animation shouldn't stray too far from the games.
Also featured at the event were scenes from "Kingdom Hearts IV," with this reveal showcasing a setting inspired by Pixar's animated film "Coco." Square Enix's current plan is to release this latest installment in the series by the end of 2027. With both the animated series and the game revealed simultaneously, D23 essentially addressed the two things fans care about most all at once—though Disney has yet to provide specific release dates for either.
