From 500 CDs to Streaming: Olivia Rodrigo Drops New Song "Serena Joy"

500 CDs, one store, sold out in a day. That was the first way Olivia Rodrigo chose to release her new song "Serena Joy": on Friday, August 21, the track was made available exclusively as a limited-edition physical CD at Analog Record Shop in Tustin, California, not far from where her upcoming Daisy Chain Fields festival is set to take place. All 500 copies sold out that same day — no streaming, no digital version, just one record shop and a line of eager fans.

Three days later, the song took on a new form. Rodrigo wrote on Instagram on August 24: "SURPRISE!!! 'Serena Joy' is now available on all streaming platforms. A portion of all net proceeds will go to the Daisy Chain Fields Fund. I love this song so much!!!!"

The song's title comes from Serena Joy Waterford, a character from Margaret Atwood's 1985 dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale — a woman who helped build the patriarchal totalitarian regime of Gilead, only to eventually be stripped of the very rights and freedoms she once championed. In the lyrics, Rodrigo explores the complicity between oppressive systems and those who benefit from them: "Come a little bit closer, sing along, sing along / What they tell you to do / Comin' around the corner / If they do it to them, they'll do it to you."

The song was recorded during sessions for her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, which was released this past June — though "Serena Joy" ultimately didn't make the final tracklist. NME gave the album four and a half stars, calling it Rodrigo's "most fully realized journey yet" and proof of her growth as both a songwriter and an artist.

The Daisy Chain Fields festival lineup includes Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, Garbage, The Breeders, KATSEYE, and Santigold, with Rodrigo closing out the event with a special-guest-filled headline set. The schedule has been deliberately arranged with no overlapping performances, and proceeds will go toward organizations advocating for women's and girls' rights.

Rodrigo kicks off her Unraveled world tour across North America next month, before heading to the UK and Europe in 2027. Ticketmaster recently canceled a batch of tickets acquired by scalpers, releasing those seats back to fans at face value.
