OpenAI COO Exits After 8 Years in Shock Departure — Execs Keep Bailing as IPO Looms

"Mission success feels within sight" — a strange line to hear from someone on their way out the door. Brad Lightcap announced on X Tuesday that he's leaving OpenAI after eight years to pursue a new venture. He called the decision "bittersweet," describing his time building the company as "the honor of a lifetime."

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and spent four years as COO, building out the company's finance, legal, HR, enterprise security, government relations, and partnerships teams from the ground up — watching the research lab grow into the AI giant it is today. In his post, he wrote he was proud the company managed to stay "human-centered" throughout, and said he hopes the world continues to trust OpenAI's tools.

He's not the only one heading for the exit. Bill Peebles, Kevin Weil, and Srinivas Narayanan all announced their departures in April 2026. In July, Fidji Simo, who led product and business, stepped down to focus on recovering from a chronic illness. That same month, AI ethics lead Chloé Bakalar left — a role that remains unfilled to this day. Before her, safety systems chief Johannes Heidecke and chief futurist Joshua Achiam had already walked out the door. In just eight months, OpenAI has cycled through leadership across its executive, ethics, and safety functions.

All of this is happening right as OpenAI prepares to step into public markets. The company quietly filed for an IPO back in June, but hasn't said when — or even if — it will actually go public. On Myriad, the prediction market built by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, traders are currently pricing in nearly 85% odds that rival Anthropic beats OpenAI to the public markets — a number that says a lot about how skeptical the market is of OpenAI's IPO timeline.

Jeff Park, a partner at asset manager ParaFi, summed up what a lot of people are thinking in a post on X: "Not a great look to have this much executive churn right before a long-awaited IPO... unless." He never finished the sentence, but that trailing ellipsis was more than enough to set social media speculating.

Lightcap himself hasn't addressed the theories directly. He wrapped up his post with an inside joke that's apparently been circulating at OpenAI: "The real AGI was the friends we made along the way." The reason for his exit, details of his next venture, and whether the IPO is actually still on track — none of that has been answered yet.
