One screenshot, one lyric-style caption, and Pokémon fans were instantly on high alert. Nintendo of America's official X account posted a scene from "Pokémon Pokopia" over the weekend, recreating one of the most iconic moments from the opening of "Pokémon Gold and Silver" — the rival character sneaking around Professor Oak's lab, ready to steal one of the starter Pokémon. The caption read: "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver, and the other's gold."
The comment section overwhelmingly interpreted this as a sign that Gold and Silver were about to make a comeback, whether referring to the original 2000 Game Boy titles or the 2010 "HeartGold and SoulSilver" remakes. "You know how badly fans want Gold and Silver remakes, and you still pull this? That's cold," one player wrote. Another added: "Don't tease us like this unless you're actually going to give us these games."
This speculation isn't coming out of nowhere. Back in February, Nintendo already brought the 2004 Game Boy Advance titles "FireRed and LeafGreen" to Switch 2 as part of the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations, racking up over 4 million downloads in the first six weeks after launch. Earlier this month, leakers also claimed that "Ruby and Sapphire" would land on Switch 2 this September or October; shortly after, Nintendo announced that "FireRed and LeafGreen" would support the cross-game trading system Pokémon Home starting in October.
Players have also uncovered several notable changes in "FireRed and LeafGreen": a new filtering system now blocks inappropriate language in Pokémon nicknames, and event tickets have been added later in the game, allowing players to catch the legendary Pokémon Lugia and Ho-Oh. Data miner Meatball_132 further discovered in the game's source code that "FireRed and LeafGreen" is programmed to "recognize" the 2003 releases "Ruby," "Sapphire," and "Emerald" — meaning that without these older titles, players currently cannot complete the National Pokédex in "FireRed and LeafGreen."
As of now, Nintendo has yet to confirm whether Gold and Silver will actually receive a new version, and the post remains firmly in tease territory.
