Pokémon×Starbucks Japan Collaboration Review: Pikachu Honey Cream Latte and 41 Merchandise Items Previously Made Limited-Time Appearance

Starbucks Japan launched its first Pokémon collaboration drink, the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte, from September 30 to October 8. The recipe was created by an internal barista champion, and 41 accompanying merchandise items were designed by illustrator Hikaru Ichijo. The event has now concluded.

Pokémon×Starbucks Japan Collaboration Review: Pikachu Honey Cream Latte and 41 Merchandise Items Previously Made Limited-Time Appearance

The first collaboration project between Starbucks Japan and Pokémon took place for a limited time from September 30 to October 8 at stores across Japan (excluding certain locations). The core product was the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte, accompanied by the simultaneous release of 41 merchandise items themed around original illustrations. Although this event has now concluded, its design ingenuity and behind-the-scenes story remain worth reviewing.

What Makes the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte Special?

This iced espresso-based beverage was available exclusively in a Tall size, using honey as the primary ingredient to capture Pikachu's signature golden hue, with caramel added to balance the rich flavor of the coffee. The surface was topped with a layer of honey cream and garnished with a heart-shaped decoration echoing Pikachu's trademark rosy cheeks. Reports noted that Starbucks intentionally designed the drink to be approachable and easy to drink, hoping to encourage customers who do not usually drink coffee to easily give it a try.

Who Designed This Recipe?

The drink recipe did not originate from headquarter planning, but rather stemmed from the Pokémon + Starbucks Barista Battle coffee competition held internally by Starbucks Japan. The event invited Pokémon-themed beverage ideas from stores nationwide, ultimately receiving over 700 proposals. After a screening process, six finalists crafted their respective creations on-site to compete. In the end, barista Junko Nitta from the Koriyama Asaka store stood out, and her designed recipe became the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte released this time, thus officially appearing on menus at Starbucks branches across Japan.

What Was the Illustration Concept for the 41 Merchandise Items?

The visual core of this collaboration was spearheaded by illustrator Hikaru Ichijo, who drew 12 original illustrations for the series depicting the interactions built through coffee between baristas and Pokémon characters, as well as the community atmosphere gradually forming around coffee. Notably, Ichijo deliberately omitted the faces of the figures in the drawings, with the intention of allowing viewers to naturally project themselves into the scenes.

In addition to the illustrations, the series was paired with eight short stories. The narrative began with the brewing of the first cup of coffee and extended to the processes of sourcing ingredients and honing brewing craftsmanship, outlining an ongoing coffee adventure. Such a narrative approach transformed the 41 items from simple merchandise printed patterns into an interconnected storyline.

When Were the Drinks and Merchandise Sold?

The Pikachu Honey Cream Latte and the 41-item merchandise collection launched simultaneously at Starbucks branches across Japan on September 30, with sales lasting through October 8. Certain stores did not participate in this event. Every sold cup of latte came with a collaborative sticker featuring designs from the same illustration series. The event period has now passed, and the related merchandise is no longer sold in stores. This collaboration also demonstrated how Starbucks Japan transforms frontline baristas' concepts into official products through internal creative competition mechanisms.
