When a traditional bank steps in to custody a stablecoin, that's usually only half the story — what really matters is what happens to the asset next. This time, Standard Chartered has its sights set on getting Ripple's stablecoin RLUSD onto the trading desk's collateral list on the XRP Ledger.
According to details disclosed by Standard Chartered, this initiative is being driven jointly by three parties: Standard Chartered, Ripple, and LMAX Group. Standard Chartered will handle custody of RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, while LMAX Group serves as the end-user of these assets — RLUSD will be incorporated into the collateral pool for specific LMAX products, available to clients during trading.
Bridging the two ends is what Standard Chartered calls a "collateral mirroring model." In simple terms, this mechanism allows RLUSD held in custody at Standard Chartered to be mirrored onto a client's LMAX trading account, where it can be used as margin or collateral — without the asset ever having to physically move or leave the custody environment. For institutional clients, this means stablecoins can remain within a regulated custody framework while still carrying collateral value recognized by the trading platform.
Publicly available information does not yet specify a launch timeline for the service, the scope of LMAX products it will apply to, or the scale and fee structure of Standard Chartered's RLUSD custody operations. These details are expected to be disclosed by the three parties at a later date.
