Century-Old Gas Tank Reborn as Concert Hall: Gasometer Taps Composer and Visual Artist for Opening

Gasometer, Stockholm's new venue, opens March 17 next year, led by composer Jacob Mühlrad and visual artist Alexander Wessely — not a traditional band or DJ lineup.

A brick gas tank completed in 1899, and the first act to perform at its opening isn't a band frontman or a buzzy DJ — it's a composer and a visual artist. That choice alone says everything about what Gasometer wants to be.

Located in Stockholm, the new venue is a protected brick gas tank originally designed by architect Ferdinand Boberg, now converted and set to open March 17 next year. A new columnless theater has been built inside, with a 1,000-capacity Dome space beneath the roof; the venue holds 2,300 standing or 1,750 seated in theater configuration. It's operated by entertainment and hospitality company Miramis, with programming led by Julien Planté, former head of entertainment at London's KOKO. The Royal Swedish Opera has already confirmed it will use the venue as its residency space for the next five years.

The opening run is set for March 17–20, headlined by composer Jacob Mühlrad alongside visual artist and creative director Alexander Wessely. Mühlrad has recently received commissions from the BBC Proms and Radio France, composed music for the 2025 Nobel Prize banquet, and had his work performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Stockholm Concert Hall. His cross-genre collaborators include Swedish House Mafia and 070 Shake, showing his work isn't confined to the classical music framework.

Wessely's work, meanwhile, has appeared in visual productions for The Weeknd, Rihanna, FKA twigs, and Arca, and has been showcased at Coachella, Madison Square Garden, and the Sphere in Las Vegas. This collaboration essentially brings classical music's commission-based pedigree together with pop culture's visual language, all housed in a space that's just shed its industrial shell.

"The launch of Gasometer isn't just about opening a new venue — we're setting a new benchmark for live entertainment in Europe," Planté said in a statement. "Bringing Jacob Mühlrad and Alexander Wessely together on the same stage signals our direction from day one — this is a space where architectural heritage meets cutting-edge artistic innovation, and we want to offer a stage where the world's top creators can realize their most ambitious visions."

General ticket information and the lineup for subsequent shows have yet to be announced.
