Suge Knight Drops Bombshell From Prison: Tupac's Ashes Allegedly Rolled Into Blunts and Passed Around

"I'm probably the only person that didn't smoke." That line comes from Suge Knight, currently serving time behind bars — but it has nothing to do with prison life. Instead, it revives an unverified, never-officially-confirmed rumor tied to the aftermath of the 1996 shooting that changed hip-hop history forever.

Suge Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, was in the driver's seat the night Tupac Shakur was shot in September 1996. Speaking to TMZ from prison, Knight said Shakur's mother, Afeni, asked for her son to be cremated immediately after his death so a ceremony could take place. He claims he approached a funeral home employee and offered $200,000 (roughly NT$6.6 million) to have the cremation done overnight — later upping the offer to $1.2 million (roughly NT$39.6 million).

According to Knight, Afeni later gathered a group of Shakur's friends and relatives in her Las Vegas hotel room, where some of the ashes were reportedly rolled into several blunts and passed around. Knight said he was on probation at the time and worried that inhaling human remains could violate his terms — so he chose not to participate.

This isn't the first time Knight has told this version of events. In an interview with People last year, he made similar claims: "A bag of his ashes got passed around, and his boys rolled him up and smoked him." Outlawz members Young Noble and EDI Mean made comparable claims back in 2011, saying some of Shakur's ashes were mixed with marijuana and smoked during a beachside memorial. They pointed to a lyric from Shakur's posthumously released track "Black Jesuz" as supporting evidence: "Last wishes, n***as smoke my ashes."

However, a spokesperson for Afeni Shakur denied the claims at the time, insisting she would "never, ever" have taken part in smoking her own son's remains. The accounts from family and friends remain contradictory to this day, with no further evidence to confirm either side.

Keffe D Murder Trial Kicks Off This Week — Knight Named on Witness List

Knight's latest comments come just as the trial over Shakur's murder gets underway this week. Defendant Duane "Keffe D" Davis has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated the drive-by shooting, though he did not fire the fatal shots himself.

On August 20, jurors heard a previously unreleased 2008 police interview recording in which Davis admitted he was in the front seat of the white Cadillac that pulled up alongside the BMW carrying Shakur and Knight that night. He said he handed a loaded gun to his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, and DeAndre "Dre" Smith, who were in the back seat — and that it was Anderson who ultimately opened fire. "We did what we had to do," Davis said in the recording, adding that he would have fired the shots himself had Knight's BMW pulled up on his side of the car.

Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, and died from his injuries six days later at the age of 25. Knight is currently serving a 28-year sentence for an unrelated manslaughter charge. He has been named on the prosecution's witness list but has not yet testified.
