This was supposed to be a moment for Rockstar Games to control the narrative — instead, a batch of unexpectedly leaked footage stole the spotlight first. According to Kotaku, Take-Two has filed two subpoena applications with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, demanding that Microsoft and Discord turn over information related to the leak of Grand Theft Auto VI footage, targeting an identity known as "Cyberleek."
From Microsoft, Take-Two is seeking investigation records tied to a GitHub repository. The repository is said to have hosted copyrighted content owned by the company, including video footage, concept art, and dialogue material. The subpoena further demands that Microsoft hand over business and investigative records related to "Microsoft's internal investigation into the Cyberleek identity."
For Discord, the targets are more specific: the accounts CYBERLEEK, CINEMATICROCKSTAR, and Surfer24k, a server run by GTA V content creator DarkViperAU, and another server called !Odyssey. According to Kotaku, Take-Two is demanding real names, phone numbers, any linked accounts, and any content these accounts have shared related to GTA VI, Rockstar, or Cyberleek.
The timing underscores just how urgent this move is. The footage began spreading online on August 18, prompting Take-Two to immediately issue takedown requests — but the leaks didn't stop. A new clip later surfaced that appeared to show Cyberleek in possession of a playable build of the game. All of this unfolded ahead of Rockstar's planned August 27 "extended look" at GTA VI, set to debut through an exclusive partnership with Netflix.
This isn't the first time GTA VI has been leaked. Back in 2022, an 18-year-old member of the hacking group Lapsus$ leaked game footage via an Amazon Fire TV Stick. A psychological evaluation later found him unfit to stand trial and at risk of reoffending online, and the court ultimately handed him an indefinite hospital order.
Whether the subpoenas will be approved by the court, and whether Microsoft and Discord will comply and hand over the requested data, remains to be seen — no further public developments have emerged at this time.
