Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 Drops October 20, New Mercs Take Over Night City

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, confirming an October 20 premiere. The CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger sequel swaps in a brand-new mercenary lineup, with a grittier art style to match.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 Drops October 20, New Mercs Take Over Night City

There's one shot in the trailer that's hard to miss: a kid holding a camera, standing against Night City's usual backdrop of neon and violence. This isn't the same crew of edgerunners from Season 1 — Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 follows an entirely new team of mercenaries, streaming from October 20 with 10 episodes.

The sequel is once again a joint production between Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red and animation studio Studio Trigger, but the team is emphasizing that Season 2 stands on its own — no need to have watched Season 1 to follow along. Netflix's official description calls the new season "a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge in a city that survives on violence" — that's the studio's own framing, and the trailer itself doesn't give much away beyond a few new faces: edgerunners, a netrunner, and that kid with the camera.

Behind the scenes, a lot of the Season 1 crew is sticking around. According to Anime News Network, Kai Ikarashi, who worked as storyboard artist and animation director on Season 1, is being promoted to director for Season 2. Masahiko Otsuka, one of Season 1's writers, returns on the writing team, Bartosz Sztybor stays on as producer and showrunner, and character design duties for the new season fall to Ichigo Kanno. In other words, the story's changed, but nearly all the core creative team that shaped Season 1's tone is still in place.

The visual style is shifting along with the story. Netflix is calling the new look a "reimagined animation style," and going by the trailer, it's noticeably grittier and rawer than Season 1's sharp, vivid lines from Studio Trigger — Night City's street-level grime feels pushed lower and heavier this time around.

Season 1 wasn't just a critical hit — it gave CD Projekt Red a real boost. Cyberpunk 2077 saw a notable spike in Steam activity after the season premiered, helping shake off some of the bad press from the game's rocky launch. CD Projekt Red is now already at work on a sequel to the game. That makes Season 2 more than just a follow-up to the anime — it's also something of a test: can Night City still tell a story worth buying into once you swap out the main cast?
