Midway through their Sunday night set on the Mountain Stage, Wolf Alice were joined by Anna Calvi and Dove Ellis. It marked the band's first-ever Green Man appearance, and came exactly a year on from the release of 'The Clearing'.
At the August 23 show, the four-piece first performed 'Sunday Light' alongside their two guests — the track originally featured on War Child's charity album 'Help(2)', with the original lineup including Ellie Rowsell and Dove Ellis alongside Anna Calvi and Nilüfer Yanya. Producer James Ford previously told NME about the making of the song, describing how Calvi "wanted a lot of vocal layers" to build up the effect: "We were all pushing for that spirit of collaboration, seeing who wanted to come down and 'howl' with us. It's a heavy, sorrowful song, almost like a funeral march, but it's really beautiful."
After 'Sunday Light', the four went on to cover Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You', with footage from the performance quickly circulating on social media.
The night's setlist also included 'Bros', 'Don't Delete The Kisses', 'Moaning Lisa Smile' and 'Giant Peach' — spanning the band's career highlights across different eras. 'The Clearing' marked Wolf Alice's second UK Number One album, and earned them their fourth Mercury Prize nomination as a band, along with a BRIT Award. Bassist Theo Ellis previously spoke about the record, saying: "Making this record was a challenge, and some parts of it aren't easy to play live either. Being able to grow like that, and not stay stuck in one place, feels great. I think we're pushing ourselves, and there's always room to push further with these songs every time we play them."
Earlier this year, Wolf Alice also played a huge homecoming show at London's Finsbury Park, which NME attended and awarded five stars. The band are set to next join Olivia Rodrigo's 'Unraveled Tour' as support on its North American leg, alongside The Last Dinner Party, Devon Again, Die Spitz and Grace Ives.
