ProveKit is not a new thing, it is just being spread out now. World announced that it would open source this set of zero-knowledge identity proof tools, but according to public information, it has actually been in operation in the World ID system since April this year. What the outside world sees now is a set of underlying tools that have been running for several months, rather than a new product that has just been produced.
World ID is the system used by World to verify the identity of "real people", and ProveKit is the toolkit that supports the zero-knowledge proof process. The so-called zero-knowledge proof simply means that it can prove that a certain statement is true without revealing the original data. This is also one of the technical methods used by World ID to handle identity verification while minimizing the leakage of personal information.
