Back in 1993, when Michael Jordan announced his first retirement, Nike wasn't about to let it pass quietly. A mysterious player named Johnny Kilroy suddenly appeared in the ads, rocking a #4 jersey and Air Jordan 9s, gliding across the court like he owned it — everyone knew, wink-wink, that it was really Jordan himself, just playing under a different name. That half-fiction, half-truth story became one of the most memorable chapters in Air Jordan advertising history during MJ's years away from the NBA.

By 2012, Jordan Brand blew the gag up into a full-blown series. Johnny Kilroy no longer carried the story alone — he was joined by five other fictional characters: Fontay Montana, Bentley Ellis, Calvin Bailey, Slim Jenkins, and Motorboat Jones. Each got his own colorway and backstory, adding up to six pairs of Air Jordan 9s that made up the Kilroy Pack, released throughout the back half of that year — essentially writing an entire fictional streetball universe through sneakers.
