It's only been a short while since the first look photos leaked, and already Kratos has a new face. Prime Video's TV adaptation of the "God of War" game franchise, originally set to star Ryan Hurst as the lead, has now confirmed Dave Bautista as his replacement.
The recast stems from an on-set accident. Hurst, known for "Sons of Anarchy" and "The Walking Dead," had progressed far enough in the casting process that first look photos of him as Kratos alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus were already released. According to reports, Hurst was injured while filming a stunt sequence, with the injury serious enough to require surgery and an expected recovery period of several months. Last month, the production made its call: rather than push the entire shoot to next year, they decided to recast the role outright.
Bautista had already been rumored as the frontrunner to step in, and that speculation has now been officially confirmed. The "God of War" series has already been given a two-season order, with Ronald D. Moore, the veteran showrunner behind numerous acclaimed series, serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.
It's certainly an unfortunate situation for Hurst, and fans are hoping he makes a full recovery. As for whether Bautista can nail that iconic "Boy" and bring the gravelly gravitas Kratos demands, we'll only know for sure once the series finally arrives.
