Ariana Grande's London O2 Show: A Flawless Business Move Before Stepping Back From the Spotlight

On August 15, Ariana Grande kicked off the first of ten London shows at The O2, marking the final leg of her tour before her team announced she'd be "stepping back from the spotlight." The stage recreated the surreal, ruin-strewn world of "Brighter Days Ahead."

A massive, decaying house overtaken by flowers dominated the main stage, growing increasingly haunted-looking as the show went on—as if any ghosts lingering there belonged to painful memories of the past. This was the most vivid image from the opening night of Ariana Grande's London residency, according to on-site observations from NME's Nick Levine at The O2. The Saturday, August 15 show marked the start of her ten-date London run and the closing chapter of the "Eternal Sunshine Tour."

According to NME, Grande's team revealed she'll "temporarily step out of the public eye" once this London run wraps, citing intense scrutiny over her appearance. That context added a heavier undertone to what had originally seemed like a triumphant closer when the tour launched in Oakland, California back in June. NME's review noted the show felt "darker and more pointed" as a result.

Twenty thousand fans packed The O2, and Grande's voice filled every corner of it. NME singled out a jaw-dropping vocal run during "Break Free," her collaboration with DJ-producer Zedd—so masterfully executed it even smoothed over the song's grammatically awkward line, "Now that I've become who I really are." The show was framed as a showcase of her vocal chops, coming from an artist with eight studio albums under her belt and an Oscar nomination for "Wicked."

But this wasn't just a vocal showcase. The stage visuals drew from Grande's 2025 short film "Brighter Days Ahead," a companion piece to her 2024 breakup concept album "Eternal Sunshine." At the show's climax, Grande was hoisted above the stage in a surreal beam of light, echoing the alien-abduction imagery from the short film—a finale NME called "sensory overload."

Midway through the set, Grande flexed her producer chops, live-looping her own vocals during "Eternal Sunshine." She cracked a whip during a sultry rendition of "The Boy Is Mine" and delivered sharp choreography for the attitude-heavy "Yes, And?" NME noted she navigated the stage effortlessly in heels "most drag queens would think twice about."

The two-hour setlist wove together bona fide classics—2016's dance hit "Into You," 2019's R&B single "Thank U, Next"—with moodier deep cuts from "Eternal Sunshine" and her new album "Petal," released just two weeks prior. NME praised how the blend really shone toward the end of the show, where the boisterous arrangement of the title track "Petal" flowed seamlessly into the emotionally raw "We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)."

There was no on-stage confession about her upcoming break from the spotlight—just Grande casually thanking fans and expressing her love for London, where she filmed "Wicked." NME's review concluded that at this point, as both a performer and a pop music auteur, she has nothing left to prove.
