But the trend that's picked up steam since earlier this year is one where even the drink menu comes with a syllabus—you sit through a lecture before you sip.
The trend usually gets traced back to Bar Thakatha, but the groundwork was really laid by years of Bangkok's public lecture and podcast culture, with what used to happen in daytime lecture halls gradually seeping into evening cocktail glasses. Here are seven bars that have turned "have a drink, do some thinking" into a regular fixture.
Bar Thakatha (Mutual Bar)This is the closest thing to an actual university seminar. The name itself comes from Pali, roughly meaning "discourse," and on lecture nights they genuinely set up a projector screen, with red neon lights glowing over a crowd of the most well-read people in their friend groups. The speakers are usually well-known Thai academics, and the topics lean toward humanities and philosophy—past sessions have dissected nineteenth-century racial diversity in Sherlock Holmes, Gothic elements in science fiction, and how "technofeudalism" from Big Tech is quietly wrecking society. The bar team isn't slacking off either—they've previously built an entire menu of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks inspired by "Hotel California." Almost Sober Club (Neighbor Thonglor)The whole space is bathed in deep red light, leaning into that "just tipsy enough to still make good decisions" vibe. Topics tend to circle around a midlife perspective: burnout at work, how to keep a relationship going. Signature drinks include Burnout, a tropical twist on a Negroni; Multitasking, topped with cream beer foam; and Never Enough, a martini-style mix of plum wine, white spirits, and vermouth. The crowd includes artists, podcasters, and yes, actual professors. The latest session, EP4, tackled "the evolution of loneliness," exploring how media, urban planning, and technology have reshaped the way people experience isolation. Haven Cocktail BarTheir Sip & Deep Talk sessions feel more like a therapy room with drinks—guests sip signature cocktails while chatting with therapists and consultants about relationships, interpersonal dynamics, and even personal finance. Beyond the lectures, there are also role-play game nights and tarot nights. A special event on August 15, "In the Mood for Drinks: Art & Cocktail Experience," will combine an art exhibition, custom cocktails, and painting and mixology workshops—check Instagram for details. Pracha BarA longtime haunt for Chulalongkorn University students, the name Pracha itself means "people," hinting at Prachathipatai (democracy). The second floor is stacked with books and board games, and the lecture format favors dialogue on equal footing rather than experts talking down to an audience, with topics closely tied to urban issues in the Samyan neighborhood. After a period of closure, it reopened on June 13 with a packed schedule of talks, book launches, and screenings. En BarTheir Sip & Sage series goes for a warm-toned atmosphere, with plenty of outlets and free Wi-Fi that clearly signal night owls are welcome to treat the place as a late-night office, swapping coffee for a signature cocktail to keep going. The lecture topics range widely: one night might cover how traditional film is adapting to digital demands in the "post-cinema" era, the next might unpack prison slang or how katoey (transgender) terminology gets shaped by its users, alongside sessions on space exploration, Buddhism, and performance art. Tuff BarTheir The Lovers' Plan is a space centered on lesbian community, serving lesbians, trans men, and queer allies alike, deliberately steering clear of surface-level rainbow marketing in favor of activism and historical education. A recent session covered key figures and moments in Thai lesbian history. But it's not all education—there's plenty of party too, including movie nights and the over-the-top drag event "Big Fake Sapphic Wedding." WastelandThis entire bar exists to deal with the scraps and offcuts other bars throw away, running an actual R&D lab on-site to test which recipes hold up and which don't. They host workshops, field trips, and lectures for the next generation of bartenders, whom they call "wastelanders." Their new BROWSE R&D series promises one brand-new experimental cocktail every week for three straight months, twelve in total.
