Paul Thomas Anderson Directs Cameron Winter Concert Film, Set to Premiere at NYFF and BFI London Film Festival
Geese frontman Cameron Winter's solo show at Carnegie Hall last December has been turned into a film by Paul Thomas Anderson, set to hit the New York and London film festivals, with MUBI confirming a 2027 streaming release.
An auteur who just won an Oscar for Best Director, slipping into the crowd to shoot footage himself—that's one of the most fascinating images from Cameron Winter's "Live At Carnegie Hall." Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the concert film documents the Geese frontman's solo show at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in New York's Carnegie Hall on December 11 last year. It's now confirmed to have its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival (September 25–October 12) and its UK premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival (October 7–18).
The show followed Geese's North American tour, with Winter reworking tracks from his 2024 solo album "Heavy Metal" in a piano-accompanied format. The film was shot entirely on 35mm and 16mm film. Attendees that night spotted Anderson personally operating the camera during the performance of "Nina + Field Of Cops," with the film's producer Benny Safdie assisting nearby. Another camera reportedly remained fixed in a second-floor box throughout the entire show.
The official synopsis released is just one brief line: "In December 2025, Cameron Winter returns to New York to play a show at Carnegie Hall after months of sold-out touring with his band Geese. This is that film."
Three-Pronged Release Plan
MUBI has acquired global rights excluding North America and plans to bring the film to streaming in 2027; North American distribution will be handled by Janus Films and Criterion. Beyond the two festival premieres and streaming plans, the film will also screen in North American theaters later this year, with tickets going on sale September 17 through the film's official website.
The same Carnegie Hall performance will also be released as a live album. Winter's debut live album "Live At Carnegie Hall" is set for release on October 9 via Partisan Records and Play It Again Sam, recorded, produced, and mixed by Ariel Rechtshaid, who also handled the film's score.
Anderson has previously directed music videos for Radiohead, The Smile, and Haim, and his latest feature film "One Battle After Another" won Best Picture and Best Director at this year's Oscars. Winter's solo show at London's Roundhouse earlier this year also earned a five-star review from NME, which described him as possessing "the power, talent, and charisma of a future superstar—capable of holding up an entire world with just his voice and a piano."
Winter is currently still touring with Geese, whose album "Getting Killed" also received a five-star review from NME and topped the outlet's album of the year list. The band recently played two sold-out shows in Glasgow, paying tribute to Dolly Parton and performing "Disco" live for the first time, and will go on to headline Reading & Leeds 2026 and End of the Road festival for the first time.
