Charlie Hunnam's Self-Made "Legends" Reunites Original "SOA" Cast to Play Themselves

Charlie Hunnam single-handedly created FX's new series "Legends," bringing back the original "Sons of Anarchy" cast to play fictionalized versions of themselves. The story kicks off after a fan convention reunion pulls them into real-world danger, and while original creator Kurt Sutter isn't involved, he's already given his blessing.

Charlie Hunnam's Self-Made "Legends" Reunites Original "SOA" Cast to Play Themselves

Over a decade later, the cast of "Sons of Anarchy" isn't slipping back into leather jackets to reprise Jax, Clay, or Gemma. Instead, they're being written into a new show where "the actors themselves" become the characters—that's the route Charlie Hunnam has chosen this time.

The limited series "Legends," which he created and developed himself, brings the original "Sons of Anarchy" cast back together, including Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. According to Deadline, original creator Kurt Sutter isn't involved in this project, but he's already voiced his support.

The premise follows fictionalized versions of the "Sons of Anarchy" cast reuniting at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended—blurring the line between on-screen and off-screen. This group of actors who once played motorcycle-gang brotherhood on TV gets pulled into a real-life threat more dangerous than anything they faced in the show. FX is confirmed to be producing the series, though a premiere date and additional casting have yet to be announced.

Having real actors play "fictionalized versions of themselves" isn't a new trick: Matt LeBlanc played himself on "Friends," and Larry David built "Curb Your Enthusiasm" around a version of his own life. Last year, "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner also announced a new series where he'd play a "werewolf hunter" version of himself. "Legends" is following the same playbook—just relocated to the world of a motorcycle gang.

"Sons of Anarchy" aired from 2008 to 2014 across seven seasons, telling the story of an outlaw motorcycle club based in California. The show earned five Emmy nominations during its run and later spawned the spinoff "Mayans M.C.," which aired from 2018 to 2023.

Kurt Sutter actually had his own sequel plans in mind. Back in 2020, during pandemic lockdown, he mentioned on social media that the "Sons of Anarchy" universe was originally envisioned as a four-part saga: "Sons of Anarchy," "Mayans M.C.," "First Nine," and "Sam Crow"—with the latter two focusing on Jax's son Abel's storyline, and "Sam Crow" specifically addressing the fates of Wendy, Nero, Abel, and Thomas. That plan never materialized, and "Legends" is clearly taking a different path.
