Chxrry Carries the Whole Show with Just a Mic — Sold-Out Brooklyn Gig Proves She IS the Stage
Chxrry played Baby's All Right in Brooklyn with nothing but a mic and a latex bodysuit, and still had the entire crowd singing loud enough to cover for Cash Cobain's absence — and drown out the online backlash over her "cheap-looking stage" from the Atlanta show before it.
At 8:15 pm on August 27th, Chxrry stepped onto the stage at Baby's All Right with no extra props — just a fitted latex bodysuit and a single microphone in her hand. It was the second sold-out Brooklyn night of The Ego Tour, and the venue was so packed that the walkway from backstage to the front was squeezed into a narrow gap by fans waiting to get through. According to The FADER's lead writer Vivian Medithi, who was there that night, the production was almost defiantly minimal — no visual effects whatsoever — yet the crowd sang along from the very first song to the last.
Two days earlier, Chxrry kicked off the tour at Center Stage in Atlanta, and footage that leaked online sparked debate over the stage looking "too cheap." But the Brooklyn show offered a different answer: during "Badness," when it came time for Cash Cobain's verse and he wasn't actually there, the entire crowd picked up the lyrics themselves and carried the whole section. Then, during the encore, Cash Cobain showed up in person to finish the song.
Chxrry's debut album, U, Me & My Ego, was crafted entirely with her longtime producer Believve, and compared to her earlier EPs, it's being described as a noticeably more mature, more fully realized step forward. The live setlist deliberately scrambled the album's original track order — opening with the emotionally heavy "Bible" instead, and closing with "Badness" as the finale. That shift moved the show's narrative focus toward the anxieties and insecurities of relationships, rather than the album's original arc of going from "nobody" to "main character." Beyond the album tracks, she also performed the standalone single "Just Like Me," along with "More" from her EP Siren.
This marks Chxrry's first album and first solo headlining tour — before this, most of her stage experience came from opening for her label boss The Weeknd, as well as for Mariah the Scientist. After the first round of shows sold out, her team added another date, bringing her back to New York at Bowery Ballroom on September 15th. Judging by that Brooklyn night, fans' expectations around "production value" may have been thrown off course by all the online chatter about Atlanta. What Chxrry's out to prove has never been about how big the stage is — it's whether one person and a single microphone can carry a whole room in song.
