D'Angelo Posthumous Album in the Works, Brother Confirms 6 Tracks Completed

D'Angelo's estate has confirmed that a posthumous album, drawn from the singer's vast archive of unreleased music, is currently in the works. The news came roughly a year after the singer's death, revealed by his brother Luther Archer in an interview with Kiss Richmond. D'Angelo passed away in October 2025 due to pancreatic cancer, and this project would be his first complete body of work since 2014's "Black Messiah."

Where does the project currently stand? Six tracks already completed

According to Archer, the family and estate team have already begun sorting through the archive, and six tracks have taken shape so far. However, he emphasized that there remains an entire vault of never-before-heard recordings to draw from, meaning the final track count and content are still far from settled.

What else is hidden in the archive?

Archer noted that among the archival recordings being considered are unreleased tracks D'Angelo recorded separately with Michael Jackson and Mary J. Blige. These recordings currently represent just a portion of the massive archive, and whether they will make the final cut remains to be confirmed.

A long-term plan beyond a single album

Beyond this posthumous album currently in progress, Archer also indicated that the estate is evaluating several long-term release plans, including the possibility of a B-side compilation, hinting that more projects will be announced in the future. This echoes comments made by Questlove at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November 2025, when he mentioned that upcoming material from the archive carries both nostalgic and forward-looking significance.

A legacy built on three albums

Over his career, D'Angelo released only three studio albums: "Brown Sugar" in 1995, "Voodoo" in 2000, and "Black Messiah" in 2014, all of which were highly acclaimed, earning him two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album. This as-yet-untitled posthumous project will mark his first complete work in over a decade, though the release date, tracklist, and release format have not yet been announced.
