On the night of October 2nd at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Brian Johnson paused to tell the crowd, "We've got something to tell you, and you better listen up." He then revealed that Dave Grohl had asked earlier that day if he could join them onstage to sing "Highway To Hell." "We said, sure, Dave." So the Foo Fighters frontman grabbed a guitar and walked onstage, reworking the 1979 classic alongside Johnson and Angus Young.
This wasn't some spur-of-the-moment stunt. During Foo Fighters' own opening set, Grohl first told the story of being 11 years old and going to a midnight screening of "Let There Be Rock." "I had no idea rock and roll could be like that. I didn't know rock and roll was sweat, blood, tears—everything you could possibly give." He said that after watching the film, he turned to the person next to him and said, "This is what I'm going to do with my life." This performance was essentially that 11-year-old's vow, brought back to life exactly as promised.
This also marks the second time in less than a month that Foo Fighters has opened for AC/DC. On September 8th, they stepped in last-minute for The Pretty Reckless in St. Louis, a show billed at the time as a "one-night-only" affair. Before that show, Grohl called sharing a stage with AC/DC "basically a dream come true." Afterward, he joked, "I don't know if we'll open for AC/DC again, but honestly, I think it'd make a great tour." The MetLife Stadium show, originally scheduled for September 25th but postponed due to weather, ended up becoming an unexpected continuation of that answer.
This show also marked the closing night of AC/DC's "Power Up" tour. The tour kicked off in May 2024 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, running a full two years in support of their 2020 album "Power Up." AC/DC hasn't announced what's next, but Johnson left the crowd with these parting words: "Thank you all... we love you, and now we have to say goodbye. Hope to see you again. So, bye-bye, goodnight, and make sure you tell your grandkids about tonight."
Foo Fighters released their twelfth album, "Your Favorite Toy," this past April. During their North American "Take Cover" tour, they also shared the stage with Queens Of The Stone Age for several shows, and in June they headlined two massive shows at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool.
