Fans who survive the ticket rush will get a staggered early-access rollout: 70mm IMAX screenings kick off December 14, standard IMAX screenings open December 15, and other premium-format theaters join in on December 17 — a full four days ahead of the official wide release on December 18.
Villeneuve has always built his sci-fi worlds with the big screen in mind, and this time is no different. The entire film was shot using a mix of physical IMAX cameras and IMAX-certified digital lenses, with 71 minutes of footage captured in an expanded aspect ratio that only fully reveals itself on specific projection systems. Standard IMAX theaters will project these segments at a 1.90:1 ratio, while the handful of theaters equipped with IMAX with Laser and 70mm film projection can open the frame up to a 1.43:1 height. This 15-perforation film format reportedly delivers nearly ten times the resolution of a traditional 35mm print, giving the desert planet's scale the visual weight it needs.
Catching the film in its most authentic analog format will take a bit of luck — right now, only 25 theaters across the U.S. have the specialized equipment needed to project 70mm IMAX film. With screening capacity already limited and the release landing close to the year-end holiday rush, these tickets have turned into a scarce commodity among fans. This four-day head start also lets the "Dune" franchise lock in box office momentum ahead of its official release, positioning itself to go head-to-head with "Avengers: Doomsday," which is set to open in the same window.
