The Bondi 7 was never built for clean lines. Thick soles, rounded shapes, comfort over aesthetics — that's exactly why this HOKA line is treated as a cushioning bible by runners, yet often dismissed by the fashion crowd as an outlier. That BEAMS chose it as the vehicle for its 50th anniversary collaboration is, in a way, a bold move: handing the most unpolished, function-first silhouette in HOKA's lineup over to a Japanese select shop known for its meticulous eye and curatorial sensibility.
The inspiration this time centers on Japanese Zen garden aesthetics. Both colorways come in camo, but each follows a different logic. The "Brown/Black" pairing draws from the layered earth tones of a karesansui rock garden, while the "Taupe/Blue Grey" option takes cues from the weathered wood grain found in centuries-old temples. In other words, one channels the visual order of raked sand and gravel, the other the mottled texture of aged, weather-worn timber — two equally quiet but texturally distinct expressions of Japanese design.
On the functional side, the collab retains the Bondi 7's original build: a vegan-friendly upper paired with breathable mesh, memory foam lining around the collar, and a TPU shank in the midfoot for added stability. None of that got sacrificed for the sake of design — the cushioning performance stays intact. Details-wise, both brand names and reflective laces are placed in subtle but identifiable spots, striking a balance between "performance shoe" and "street piece" that defines this collaboration.
What Both Sides Had to Say
Thomas Cykana, HOKA's Senior Director of Global Collaborations and Partnerships, noted that Tokyo has long served as a key base for HOKA's push beyond pure performance thinking into street aesthetics, and letting BEAMS' curatorial expertise reinterpret the Bondi 7's visual language is what makes this collaboration stand out. Keita Kobayashi, BEAMS' men's casual wear buyer, added that the goal wasn't just to make another collab sneaker — it was to build a lifestyle proposal based on the Bondi 7 that steps outside the traditional athletic apparel framework, one that fits naturally into American casual styling while still delivering a fashion-forward surprise.
The HOKA × BEAMS Bondi 7 launches exclusively at BEAMS Eslite Nanxi nationwide starting August 14, with both the "Brown/Black" and "Taupe/Blue Grey" colorways priced at NT$6,280 each. For one week starting that same day, the store will recreate the brand's earlier display concept from Paris Fashion Week, presenting the collection through its signature shoe-column visual setup. The location is 1F, No. 14, Nanjing West Road, Zhongshan District, Taipei (Eslite Spectrum Nanxi Store), open Sunday to Thursday 11:00–22:00 and Friday to Saturday 11:00–22:30.
