Get Jiro! Animated Adaptation Arrives: A Near-Future LA Fable Where Chefs Rule

Adult Swim premiered the animated series Get Jiro! in the United States on October 3, 2026, with HBO Max adding it the following day. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, the first season consists of 10 episodes, with actor Brian Tee voicing the lead character, sushi chef Jiro. The story is set in a near-future Los Angeles where chefs hold the city's true power, food functions as a circulating currency, and which restaurant a person can enter directly determines their place in the city's hierarchy. This setup continues from the 2012 comic of the same name, co-created by the late chef Anthony Bourdain and writer Joel Rose.

A Near-Future Fable of Chefs in Power

The power structure from the comic becomes, in the animated version, a set of visible urban rules: restaurants determine access and status, and chefs not only handle food but also decide who may enter certain places. This setup can be read as a satire of culinary identity and gatekeeping. Once viewers grasp this rule, they can see how the work magnifies a single dish into a social order.

Who Is Jiro Based On?

The character's name and setting easily bring to mind Jiro Ono of Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo, but Bourdain explicitly clarified in interviews that the character Jiro has no connection to Jiro Ono. One source of inspiration he mentioned was Naomichi Yasuda, chef of Sushi Bar Yasuda in New York; Yasuda, who practiced karate for many years, has notably powerful hands, and this physical trait was written into the character's design.

Another referenced touchstone is Ginza Sukiyabashi's main location, founded in 1885, which was also the training ground for Masa Takayama in his early years. These references to real-life culinary figures can be read as entry points into understanding the comic's creative background; the character design draws on traits from various people and remains neither a biography of Jiro Ono nor of any single chef.

When Can Audiences in Taiwan Watch This Series?

US broadcast information lists Adult Swim's premiere on October 3, 2026, with HBO Max adding the series the next day; these dates cannot be directly applied to Taiwanese accounts. Those hoping to watch in Taiwan need to check local streaming libraries and official programming information, confirming the title, available regions, and release timing, rather than assuming availability based solely on the US announcement.

Overall, Get Jiro! translates a comic published more than a decade ago into an animated series, preserving the original's sharp vision of power structures in the food industry while continuing Bourdain's observational perspective on chef identity and industry culture during his lifetime.
