Hinata Shoyo is finally about to face off against "the Little Giant" Korai Hoshiumi—that's the biggest draw of this Haikyuu!! special program. The official team chose August 19, celebrated every year as "Haikyuu!! Day" (based on the Japanese reading of the numbers 8-1-9), to premiere "Haikyuu!! RECEPTION #3" on TOHO animation's official YouTube channel at 8:19 PM Japan time (7:19 PM Taiwan time), delivering new information on both the second theatrical film Haikyuu!! Movie: VS the Little Giant and the special anime Haikyuu!! Where the Monsters Go all at once.
The program was hosted by Ritsuki Higashi, the manga's editor, with cast members including Ayumu Murase (voice of Hinata Shoyo) and Kaito Ishikawa (voice of Kageyama Tobio). The official announcement promised a large amount of new information would be revealed, though it didn't specify whether this would include an official trailer, release date, or key visual—details that remain unconfirmed until the broadcast itself.

The storyline is clear: VS the Little Giant picks up after 2024's Haikyuu!! The Movie: Battle of the Junkyard, where Karasuno High School defeated Nekoma High School to advance to the top eight at the Spring High tournament. Next up, they'll face Kamomedai High School, led by Korai Hoshiumi, officially setting up the showdown between Hinata and Hoshiumi. Production I.G continues to handle animation production, with Susumu Mitsunaka—director of Battle of the Junkyard—returning as director and screenwriter. The film is scheduled for release in 2027.
Another top-eight matchup hasn't been left out. Fukurodani Academy, led by Kotaro Bokuto, will face off against Mujinazaka High School, home to Yaku Morisuke—wait, actually featuring Yoichi—er, one of the "Three Great Aces of the Nation," Sakusa (Kiryu Hachi), in a standalone special anime titled Where the Monsters Go, also set for release in 2027. By handling these two ace showdowns separately, the full climax of the Spring High arc will be delivered to fans in its entirety.

One notable change worth mentioning is the shift in naming. When Haikyuu!!'s anime sequel was first announced in 2022, it was presented as two "FINAL" theatrical films. However, the official website has since gradually dropped the "FINAL" label, and the projects are now officially titled Haikyuu!! Movie: VS the Little Giant and Where the Monsters Go. Since there's still plenty of unadapted story material from the original manga after the Spring High arc, this renaming has led fans to speculate that VS the Little Giant may not necessarily mark the end of the anime series.
The previous film, Battle of the Junkyard, grossed over 20 billion yen worldwide, bringing Karasuno and Nekoma's long-awaited "Battle of the Junkyard" to the big screen. Now, with the story advancing to the direct clash between Hinata and Hoshiumi, plus another ace showdown between Bokuto and Kiryu, both films are set for 2027. This August 19 livestream effectively sets the tone for the next two years of Haikyuu!! anime.
