A podcast recording has become the proof that the "National Treasure" franchise is finally being revived after nearly twenty years. Director Jon Turteltaub confirmed live on the "National Treasure Hunt" podcast that "National Treasure 3" has officially entered development, with the script currently in the works.
Turteltaub said on the podcast that the team is aiming to bring back as many original cast members as possible. So far, neither Disney nor representatives for star Nicolas Cage have made an official statement on the news, but Turteltaub emphasized that the creative momentum behind the project has officially restarted.
Released in 2004, "National Treasure" grossed $347 million worldwide, following historian Ben Gates and Abigail Chase on a treasure hunt tied to the Declaration of Independence. The 2007 sequel, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," pushed the franchise's global box office further to $459 million. Disney's streaming platform Disney+ expanded the universe in 2022 with the spin-off series "National Treasure: Edge of History," but the main film series has been dormant for nearly two decades.
