"Put your money where your feet are"—there's no softening, no sugarcoating for consumers here. This slogan lays the $400 price tag bare, straight up. And that's exactly the message New Balance's newly unveiled Made in USA 2040v5 is stepping out with.
According to Sneaker Freaker, the 2040v5 carries the style code U2040509 and arrives in a "Castlerock/Mood Indigo/Blacktop" colorway. It launches in North America first on August 20, with a global release officially slated for next May.
The 2040 line isn't new. When it first debuted in 2012, New Balance was pushing "Made in USA" to its absolute limit—top-tier materials, tech stacked to the max, and naturally, a higher cost. Back then it retailed for $275. The v2, launched in 2014, brought in a partnership with Horween Leather Company—renowned in the industry for its leathercraft—and that collaboration carried through the v3 in 2016 and v4 in 2018, both holding steady at a $350 MSRP. In other words, the 2040v5's $400 price tag marks the series' first price jump in over a decade.
Where the money's going is also pretty well accounted for. The upper is built with Horween Leather, layered over a two-tone mesh base. The midsole stacks three layers of cushioning: FuelCell foam for that propulsive feel, ABZORB SBS for extra impact resistance, and lightweight ENCAP tech wrapped in polyurethane. On top of that, two carbon fiber plates are packed in for reinforced support—a genuine dual-carbon-plate setup. Detail-wise, the midsole features a large FuelCell badge, a TPU-molded "2040" logo, and "USA" embroidery on the heel.

Sneaker Freaker's report draws a comparison between this price controversy and the 1985 NB1300's "Mortgage the house" slogan—back then, the $130 price tag was already considered sky-high, earning the NB1300 the nickname "the Rolex of sneakers." That comparison alone says a lot: this isn't the first time New Balance has stirred debate with a premium price point—the 2040v5 is just doubling down on the bet.
Reactions online are genuinely split. Per the report, some are defending the $400 price tag, others are calling it flat-out too expensive, and a chunk of people admit "it's worth it"—but still won't be buying. That hesitation itself might be exactly the kind of conversation this shoe was designed to spark.
If you're into the whole top-spec, tech-stacked-to-the-max American-made approach, the 2040v5 probably won't disappoint. But if $400 is a threshold you can't get past, Sneaker Freaker's advice is straightforward: wait for next year's Made in USA release.
The New Balance Made in USA 2040v5 launches exclusively in North America on August 20, with a global release expected next May. No further sales details have been announced at this time.
