The 2040 line first launched back in 2012, and it's always held the position of New Balance's top-tier performance model within the Made in USA lineup. Arriving after years of hiatus, this fifth generation carries that legacy forward. The upper is built on nubuck, giving it a more refined feel that diverges from the breathable mesh direction most running shoes favor these days. Tucked into the sole is a full-length carbon fiber plate, handling stability and propulsion—a rare inclusion within the New Balance family, which typically leans on heritage. Configurations like this are usually reserved for shoes built purely for speed.
