norda x Black Diamond Collab Skips the Logo-Slap Playbook, Builds a Shoe From Scratch

In their first-ever collaboration, norda and Black Diamond ditched the usual approach of slapping logos on an existing shoe. Instead, they built an entirely new running shoe from the ground up—model 000—and extended the collection into a backpack, trekking poles, and apparel, with materials echoing each brand's signature craft: Dyneema and Challenge Sailcloth.

Most outdoor collabs follow the same formula: pick a shoe that's already selling well, swap the colorway, slap on two logos. norda and Black Diamond flipped the script this time—they decided how they wanted people to move through terrain first, then worked backward to figure out what the shoe should actually look like.

norda's Creative Director Adam John put it bluntly in an interview: "We didn't take an existing shoe and co-brand it. We built a completely new shoe to define the kind of movement we wanted to express." The result is the collab's centerpiece, the norda x Black Diamond 000—a mountain trail shoe built for long efforts across wildly varied terrain.

The collaboration's origin actually traces back to one person. Dan Rowe, Black Diamond's Head of Special Projects and Design, mentioned that the two brands first came together out of a shared admiration for trail runner Joe Grant—someone who'd racked up plenty of results on the traditional race circuit, but eventually gravitated toward a way of moving through the mountains that went beyond what times and stats could capture. Joe Grant later became the key link between the two brands, and several pieces in the collection draw directly on his real-world mountain running experience.

Materials Are Where the Two Brands Actually Click

norda is known for its heavy, precise use of Dyneema®—billed as the world's strongest fiber—in its running shoes. The gear in this collection follows the same logic: the Distance 15 Pack backpack and Mini Mission Duffle 30L travel bag use Black Diamond's equivalent material, Challenge Sailcloth, effectively pairing each brand's own "toughest fabric." Adam John noted that the team added embroidery to the Distance Pack and Mini Mission Duffel to nod to the brands' heritage, while also introducing details that had never appeared before—like anodizing and laser etching on the Distance Carbon Z FKT trekking poles—so old and new design languages coexist within the same set of gear.

The full collection includes the norda 000 running shoe, plus reworked versions of the Distance 15 Pack backpack, Distance Carbon Z FKT trekking poles, Mini Mission Duffle 30L travel bag, Miniwire carabiner, T-shirt, and cap. The colorway centers on obsidian and moonstone, with pops of pink kunzite—drawing inspiration from the mineral tones commonly found in mountain terrain.

Dan Rowe added that the two design teams started out being respectful of each other, but it actually took some time to genuinely find their shared creative spirit—it was something that got worked out gradually. Both sides share a similar feeling toward the mountains, and both believe a product should be "purposeful, thought-through, and free of unnecessary decoration."

The collection made its debut at Sanglard Sports in Chamonix, France, and is now available on nordarun.com and blackdiamondequipment.com. Pricing and whether it will land in Taiwan have not been mentioned.
