Reading Festival Applies for Extended Thursday Performance License, Local Residents Object Over Noise Concerns

Festival Republic has applied for a license allowing Thursday main stage performances at Reading Festival, potentially taking effect as early as 2027, but local resident groups have pushed back citing noise concerns disrupting sleep. Organizers insist their assessment shows no negative impact.

Reading Festival Applies for Extended Thursday Performance License, Local Residents Object Over Noise Concerns

A single application has nearly turned Reading Festival from a three-day event into a four-day one — and reignited the conversation about "noise" between organizer Festival Republic and local residents.

This past July, Festival Republic submitted a license variation application to Reading Borough Council, requesting permission to add amplified music performances on Thursdays, with a window locked in between 5pm and midnight, limited to the main stage. If approved, the change could take effect as early as 2027. Traditionally, Wednesday and Thursday have just been days for Reading fans to set up camp and get in the mood, with the actual performances kicking off Friday and running through Sunday, aligned with the UK's August bank holiday weekend. This year's Reading Festival runs from August 27 to 30.

Sister event Leeds Festival takes place the same weekend, and Leeds has already secured its Thursday performance license — set to debut this year with Kasabian headlining the Thursday main stage.

Reading's application, however, has struck a nerve with the local community. According to BBC News, hundreds of residents have voiced opposition to the change. Elisa Miles, chair of the Warren & District Residents Association (WADRA), said the group is "not opposed outright" to the festival, but is concerned about the impact of the change on nearby households. She noted that over the years, the association has worked with Festival Republic to help them understand the festival's effect on neighboring residents and jointly developed practical solutions — but "late-night amplified music will disrupt the sleep of residents who have no choice but to stay home." Malcolm Pemble of the Caversham and District Residents Association (CADRA) shares the same stance, calling the change "unfair" to local residents.

Festival Republic has defended the plan, stating that its assessment shows Thursday live music would not have a "negative impact" on residents. The organizers also raised another consideration: allowing attendees to gather for scheduled evening entertainment rather than "being left in campsites or less supervised areas."

This year's dual headliners for Reading & Leeds include Fontaines D.C., Florence + The Machine, DAVE, Charli XCX, RAYE, and Chase & Status. The festival is also undergoing its biggest-ever stage and venue overhaul, with the main stages at Reading's Little John's Farm and Leeds' Bramham Park both being upgraded and renamed The Grid, alongside two new stages, The Gallery and The Warehouse. Festival organizer Melvin Benn told NME that the overhaul has left him "more excited about Reading & Leeds than at any point since founding Leeds in 1999." He also addressed the fact that this year's headliner lineup leans heavily British and Irish, saying it wasn't a deliberate choice but rather that "six or seven headline acts we wanted just happened to be from the UK and Ireland," citing Kneecap's 25,000-strong show at Crystal Palace two weeks ago as evidence of the strength of British and Irish music right now.

Ahead of the festival, Reading & Leeds has also teamed up with Spotify to offer personalized playlists based on attendees' listening habits, helping fans discover new artists on-site.

The license application is still under review by Reading Borough Council, with approval status and further timeline yet to be announced.
