Ronnie Wood Opens Hendrix Art Exhibition, Stones Tour Still Hinges on Keith

Ronnie Wood has opened a Hendrix exhibition in London's Mayfair, and while he was at it, he opened up to NME about a rarely seen side of his old friend—and revealed the Stones tour is still waiting on a nod from Keith Richards.

The Jimi Hendrix in these paintings is rarely screaming—more often he's got lowered eyes and a tense expression, as if unsure whether he should even be on that stage. This is the most private side of Hendrix as captured by Ronnie Wood's brush, and it's exactly the angle Wood wants people to see with this exhibition.

The exhibition, titled "Ronnie Wood: The Jimi Hendrix Portraits," is held at Handel Hendrix House—Hendrix's former flat on Brook Street in London's Mayfair, next door to where composer George Frideric Handel once lived some two hundred years earlier. The exhibition is now open and runs through April 11, 2027. Alongside previously revealed paintings and sketches, the show also features two brand-new, never-before-seen Hendrix portraits by Wood.

Wood met Hendrix shortly after moving to London in 1966, back when he was playing bass in the Jeff Beck Group, and the two later briefly lived together in Holland Park. "By the time I met him, he was already the name everyone was talking about," Wood told NME. "People like Eric Clapton were saying things like, 'Have you seen this new phenomenon?' Word traveled fast in those circles back then—everyone was saying, 'You've got to check out this new guy in town.'" He still remembers the first time he really talked with Hendrix at The Speakeasy Club in Soho: "He came and sat at my table after his show, and for some reason, he just opened up to me like that."

Rather than the Hendrix of the stage, Wood wants people to know the friend who was "almost like a recluse." "Privately he was really shy, he didn't even like the sound of his own singing voice. I remember he worried about it a lot, and I told him, 'Jimi, you don't need to worry about that... the way you play guitar already makes up for it.' I told him to stop stressing about his singing, because it actually complemented the way he played." He also admitted that Hendrix's face was genuinely hard to paint. "His expressions were so rich—sometimes it flows and sometimes you just can't get the eyes right. But that spirit, that presence, usually comes through in the end."

Wood's painting schedule ahead is packed. This November, a museum in Tübingen, a small town south of Stuttgart, Germany, will dedicate its entire space to him, showcasing over one hundred original works plus one hundred fifty prints and sculptures, in a show running for half a year.

The Stones Want to Tour—But Keith Richards Is the Holdup

Asked whether The Rolling Stones might return for a UK tour, Wood left the door ajar. "Right now I'm fully immersed in my band Ammo, tearing up venues everywhere. I'm really into it, but the moment the Stones give the word, I'll be right back. There's nothing planned at the moment, aside from taking Ammo to South America next—we just finished our run through Europe."

Asked whether he'd heard any whispers of the Stones getting back on stage, Wood was blunt: "No. I know Mick (Jagger, lead vocalist) can't wait to get out there, but Keith isn't quite as keen. Something like this needs everyone fired up for it." Even if not a full tour, could Glastonbury 2027 be an option? "I'd go in a heartbeat, but not everyone feels the same way. I think we should do a show, we should go on tour—but it's easier said than done."

As for reactions to the new album "Foreign Tongues," Wood says everyone who's heard it loves it. "But what we need next is to bring it to the stage. Mick and I did a small listening event a little over a month ago, played a track from the album and a few others—it was fun, but what we really need is to get the whole band back together."

As for the long-rumored Faces reunion, with Rod Stewart announcing his farewell tour, that's also been put on hold for now. "Yeah, while I'm touring with my band and Rod's touring with his, let's just let both of those run their course, and we'll pick things up after. We've still got some pretty good Faces material in the bank."
