A horror film paying homage to the slasher genre, yet scoring a scene with Sade's "No Ordinary Love" — that contrast alone makes Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma worth watching for. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, the film opens in UK and Irish cinemas this Friday (August 21), following its Queer Palm win at Cannes back in May.

The story follows Kris, played by Hannah Einbinder, who's hired to reboot the fictional Camp Miasma slasher franchise. Her research leads her to track down the series' "final girl," Billy, played by Gillian Anderson. Their meeting pulls the film into a bloody world tangled up with fear and desire. The cast also includes Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, and Patrick Fischler.

The original score comes from Alex G, marking his third collaboration with Schoenbrun after previously working together on We're All Going To The World's Fair and I Saw The TV Glow. Beyond the score, the film features a striking lineup of needle-drops, with R.E.M., Sade, and M83 all making the cut.

Schoenbrun's previous film, I Saw The TV Glow, landed on NME's list of the best films of 2024, with our four-star review praising it for tackling "memory, nostalgia, and the way we consume media." Whether this third team-up with Alex G carries the same tone remains to be seen once the film hits screens.
