Fire TV Stick has no official lifespan, and Netflix’s withdrawal is the real expiration date

Amazon only guarantees security updates for the Fire TV Stick for at least four years, but that's not the end of the hardware. What really kills a streaming stick is when apps like Netflix give up on it first.

Fire TV Stick has no official lifespan, and Netflix’s withdrawal is the real expiration date

There is no expiration date in the settings menu, and the words "please replace in what year" can't be found on the manual. Amazon has never set a clear physical lifespan for the Fire TV Stick, but it has given a specific number for security updates: at least four years, starting from the time when consumers purchase the device directly from Amazon, or until the officially announced support end date, whichever is later. Security updates for the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and Fire TV Stick 4K Plus currently on sale are guaranteed to be available until at least December 31, 2030.

Four years is the bottom line, not a countdown. Amazon is talking about the deadline for security patching, not that the hardware will automatically announce that "the last episode has been broadcast" on that day.

The hardware can still be turned on, but the app gives up first.

Most Fire TV Sticks that have passed the security update period can still turn on and operate normally, but the threshold for "can turn on" is actually not high for a streaming device. As interfaces evolve and audio and video specifications improve, old devices will become increasingly difficult to use, even if the internal parts are intact.

Audio and video encoding is one of the levels. New generation codecs such as H.265/HEVC and AV1 can compress the same image quality with a lower amount of data, provided that the device has corresponding decoding hardware. The current Fire TV Stick 4K Select and 4K Plus are tied in this regard. Both support AV1 and H.265 hardware decoding up to 4K60, and Plus has no additional advantages.

It is often the App that gives up earlier than the hardware. Netflix officially stated that some TVs and streaming devices launched before 2015 may no longer be able to use its app. This just demonstrates the truest appearance of the aging of the streaming stick: the hardware itself is still running, but one of the reasons why you bought it may have quietly expired. Netflix has terminated support for the first-generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick in June 2025. According to The Verge, these devices were launched in 2014 and were in service for more than ten years before being discontinued.

When should you really consider replacing one?

Just because your streaming is slowing down doesn't mean it's time to retire. Amazon recommends restarting the device, installing available updates, clearing the App cache, and troubleshooting network problems. Insufficient power may also cause the device to restart repeatedly, making a healthy Fire TV Stick look like it is about to break down.

The signs that you really need to change are relatively clear: the app crashes repeatedly, a specific service has announced that it no longer supports the model you have, the menu is still stuck after troubleshooting, or the storage space is chronically insufficient.

Buy one with higher specifications to get a little more buffer space. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select comes with 1GB of RAM and costs about $40; the 4K Plus has 2GB of RAM and costs about $50. Amazon mentioned that insufficient memory will cause the App to be shut down by the system on low-memory Fire TV hardware. The extra $10 will buy you some margin when the software becomes heavier and heavier in the future. This does not mean that it can last for another year or two, and Amazon has not promised such a thing - the Vega OS used by Select itself has a streamlined design and can be expanded across devices. However, if you plan to use the same streaming stick for a long time, it is still worth considering to exchange the price difference of a lunch for twice the memory.

The remote control is another variable. The two AAA batteries will have to be replaced sooner or later, and the parts can be replaced separately if the remote control fails. To say the least, Amazon's Fire TV mobile app itself can replace the physical remote control operation. A broken remote control does not mean that the entire Fire TV Stick is scrapped.
