AirPods Are Getting Eyes: Apple Reportedly Building Cameras Into Earbuds, But Not for Photos

Slapping a camera onto AirPods might sound like a gimmick nobody asked for, but this time photography clearly isn't the point. According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing AirPods with a built-in camera, internally codenamed "B790." References to the project have already surfaced in iOS 27 beta code, and the earbuds could make their debut as early as next month's iPhone 18 Pro event.

Let's be clear upfront: this isn't a lens for snapping pics or shooting video. The engineering team reportedly designed it as a low-resolution visual sensor built purely for AI processing — its job is to let Siri "see" what's around the wearer and answer natural-language questions about objects in view. In other words, it's a pair of eyes riding on your ears, with the data feeding straight into AI rather than your camera roll.

This logic actually builds on an accessibility feature Apple already showed off earlier this year. Image Explorer, part of VoiceOver and Magnifier, lets users who are blind or have low vision point their phone's camera viewfinder at something, press a physical button, and ask follow-up questions in natural language to get detailed descriptions of specific objects on screen. Porting that mechanism from the phone to the earbuds means users would no longer need to hold up a phone and aim it at their surroundings — the whole experience becomes genuinely hands-free.

Putting a camera on earbuds naturally raises privacy red flags. The rumored fix is a small LED indicator that lights up whenever the sensor is actively capturing, signaling to people nearby that the device is reading the scene — using hardware-level cues instead of relying on after-the-fact privacy disclosures.

Zoom out, and this isn't the first time Apple has been quietly stuffing health and sensor tech into AirPods: the hearing health features that launched in 2024, and the heart-rate sensing added to AirPods Pro 3 in 2025, sit on the same trajectory. Add this rumored camera version to earlier reports suggesting AirPods Pro 4 might integrate an infrared lens for gesture control, and it's clear Apple's vision for earbuds has moved well beyond just "listening."

For now, this hardware remains an unconfirmed rumor — Apple hasn't officially acknowledged it, and details like release timing, design, and pricing are all still up in the air. All eyes are on September's keynote.
