Arashiyama Collective Opens in Kyoto in April 2027 with a Tatsuo Miyajima Exhibition
Daimaru Matsuzakaya plans two art floors, with an open gallery below and an invitation-based space above. KIAS brings daylight and the local setting into the design.
Kyoto's Arashiyama art itinerary will gain another destination next year. Daimaru Matsuzakaya has announced Arashiyama Collective, scheduled to open in April 2027 with a solo exhibition by Tatsuo Miyajima. Announced in October 2026, this is a future project, rather than a venue currently open to visitors. Contemporary art will meet Arashiyama's history, culture and inherited Japanese aesthetics in a setting outside the department store's existing art sales floors.
Two floors, with different access arrangements
The two-story wooden building has approximately 111.70 square meters downstairs and 103.69 upstairs, totaling 215.39. The ground floor is planned as an open gallery, while the upper floor operates through invitation or introduction. This difference will shape future visits: both floors cannot be assumed freely accessible at all times. Opening hours and detailed arrangements remain to be announced.
The official concept brings together co-creation, inheritance and crossing boundaries. These concern collaboration with artists, galleries and local partners; Kyoto's accumulated culture and design; and exchanges among art, fashion, design and craft. They are curatorial ambitions, rather than completed partner lists for every exhibition or a promise to include all traditional crafts in one show.
Architecture brings daylight and scenery into the experience
Kentaro Ishida's KIAS designs the space as an experience involving artworks, visitors, natural light and the surrounding landscape, beyond a container for objects. Exterior imagery shows a dark facade, entrance and planting, while the interior uses walls, beams and a distant opening to direct viewing. Both images are project visualizations, rather than photographs taken after opening.
The interior visualization arranges viewing through walls, beams and a distant opening.
Hong Kong- and Tokyo-based Eight Partnership contributes brand research, naming, visual identity and communication tools. From name to architecture, the project seeks a shared entry point for audiences with different backgrounds. What remains to be seen is how those visual and architectural choices support the art, beyond using Arashiyama scenery as an attractive backdrop.
Miyajima opens the program; later exhibitions follow next year
Time and life have long informed Tatsuo Miyajima's work, with digital numbers an important language. Representative works include Mega Death, Sea of Time and Time Waterfall. These explain his practice, but are not a confirmed checklist for this exhibition. Subsequent exhibitions are scheduled to be announced from early 2027 onward.
The address is 7-1 Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, approximately four minutes on foot from Randen Arashiyama Station according to official directions. Follow the Arashiyama Collective official website for updates. For a spring 2027 visit, treat April as the planned month and confirm exact dates, exhibitions and access conditions later. The relationship among place, architecture and art will develop as the venue begins operating.
