Bumble Drops Its Signature "Women Message First" Rule — Now Anyone Can Make the First Move

Bumble was built on one simple rule: after a match, only women could send the first message. It was one of the few concrete ways the app differentiated itself in a crowded field of dating platforms. On August 11, that rule officially became history — now, either person in a match can send the first message, though the conversation only truly begins once the other person chooses to reply.

Founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd hinted back in May that changes to the messaging system were coming, but the actual rollout goes further than most expected. The system now detects when a user is about to send a lazy one-word opener and prompts them to put in more effort. According to research released by Bumble, 62% of male and female users said they feel more confident when they get to decide when and how a conversation starts — though that figure only covers male and female users, not the broader spectrum of gender identities on the app.

Truthfully, the "women message first" rule had already been fading in practice for a while. Back in 2022, Bumble let non-binary matches message first from either side, and same-sex matches were never subject to the rule to begin with. Then in 2024, the "Opening Moves" feature let women set a prompt for their match to answer first — effectively giving men in straight matches a way to make the first move too. In that sense, this latest change is less a sudden shift and more Bumble formally wrapping up a policy that had already been quietly unraveling.

Message recipients now have a 72-hour window to reply and officially open the conversation. This update is part of a string of recent moves from Bumble — including the March launch of its AI assistant Bee, and Wolfe Herd's publicly discussed plans for in-person events — all aimed at carving out new ground as Tinder continues to lead the U.S. market (per data from Business of Apps). The new rule is live on the Bumble app starting today.
