$699 Gets You an OLED Screen—HP's OmniBook 5 Pushes Budget Laptop Specs to a New Level

A $699 laptop with an OLED display is still rare in today's market. HP's new OmniBook 5 makes it standard equipment, featuring a 2.5K resolution OLED touch panel paired with a 180-degree flip hinge that lets you lay it completely flat for tablet use. Looking around, the only other recent model pushing affordable OLED is the previously released Acer Swift Go 16 AI—OmniBook 5 essentially drags that price point down even further.

The processor options top out at Intel Core 7, with a built-in NPU for AI-related computing tasks. The chassis measures just 11.77mm thick and weighs slightly over 2.5 pounds—even lighter than the buzzy MacBook Neo, which sits around the same $700 price range. The port layout is fairly minimal: two USB-C ports, an FHD infrared camera, and dual microphones, useful for video calls or facial recognition unlock.

Battery life is this machine's standout number—HP claims up to 42 hours on a single charge. That figure comes from local video playback testing, though, and the company notes that running more demanding software will noticeably cut into that runtime. In other words, 42 hours represents the best-case scenario; real-world mixed usage will depend on how you actually use it.

The base configuration comes with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, available in four color options. OmniBook 5 is expected to launch in the US this month, though HP has yet to announce an exact release date.
