The moment the third-person view disappears, that tunnel shortcut on Koopa Troopa Beach suddenly feels completely different — instead of watching your kart barrel through it, you're the one going in headfirst. A clip posted by X user BeardoBenjo shows Mario Kart 64, the 1997 classic, getting hearts racing again in a way its original designers probably never imagined.

This is a VR mod built by developer RaYRoD TV, running on top of SpaghettiKart, a PC port of Mario Kart 64. This isn't RaYRoD TV's first rodeo either — they've previously done the same VR treatment for Banjo-Kazooie and Star Fox 64. The approach here shifts the entire game into first-person with head tracking, so you're no longer piloting that kart on screen from a distance — you're strapped right into that low-poly driver's seat.

The chunky, low-poly visuals take on a weirdly charming quality in VR, but the real story is the sense of speed — no amount of third-person camera work can replicate the genuine "oh god I'm actually moving" illusion of tilting your head forward. One swing of the camera on that beach course and your body instinctively reaches for something to hold onto.

The mod is free and available for download on GitHub, though you'll need your own copy of the Mario Kart 64 ROM — dumping it from your own cartridge works fine too. Once installed, there's a dedicated VR menu letting you tweak stereo depth, eye height, and HUD placement, small details that suggest this wasn't a slapdash conversion job.

Nintendo itself has never shown much enthusiasm for VR, aside from the primitive stereoscopics of the Virtual Boy and the one-off Nintendo Labo VR kit — pretty much radio silence since. If you've got a VR headset gathering dust at home and a soft spot for the N64 era, this might be the perfect way to kill a weekend afternoon — just maybe don't play it on a full stomach.
