New Balance 204L "Heron Blue" Brings That Faded Denim Look to Your Feet

Blue isn't the point here—faded is. New Balance is pushing the 204L into a "Heron Blue" and "Vintage Indigo" combo that looks like a denim jacket that's been through the wash one too many times: the color's still there, but time has worn down all the sharp edges.

The upper starts with a breathable mesh base, layered with premium suede and synthetic paneling. The main "Heron Blue" hue channels the grayish, powdery blue of a heron's feathers—cool, muted, never overplaying its hand. What really sells the denim vibe, though, is the outsole: a mauve-brown layer with an acid-wash finish that mimics the purplish-brown blotches typical of faded denim, standing out as the shoe's only warm accent.

The white "N" logo pulls the whole look back into focus, cutting a clean line through the low-contrast blue-and-brown palette. There's no big dramatic contrast at play here—instead, the shoe leans on layered textures to do the talking: the roughness of the suede, the lightness of the mesh, the worn-in feel of the outsole. Three different textures come together to make a shoe that looks quiet at first glance, but reveals plenty of depth up close.
