The typical logic behind a signature shoe is to maximize brand identity so the silhouette is instantly recognizable at a glance. New Balance's first solo model for Tyrese Maxey, however, does the opposite in a rather unconventional move — deliberately pushing the iconic "N" logo into the background.
The shoe first appeared on-court during the 2026 NBA Playoffs as a player-exclusive, and New Balance has now officially announced its retail release, moving it from a game-tested prototype to store shelves. The low-top silhouette's design language didn't come out of nowhere: the wave-like paneling on the upper, the sculpted midsole, and the wrapped heel shape all echo the 9060, while the lacing setup carries a touch of the 2002's understated vibe. Elements from two lifestyle sneakers have been folded into a performance shoe built for explosive cuts on the hardwood — and that's the most interesting thing to unpack about the Maxey V1: it leads with design language before it leads with tech.
