OSAKA ART BOOK FAIR plans its debut for May 2027

OSAKA ART BOOK FAIR 2027 is scheduled to debut at Osaka City Central Public Hall in Nakanoshima from May 28 to 30, 2027. Around 150 publishers, galleries, artists and creators from Japan and abroad are planned. This is a forthcoming event next year, rather than a fair already open this weekend. Its producer announced the plans on October 1, and exhibitor applications are still underway; a complete confirmed lineup should not be assumed.

The organiser is the OSAKA ART BOOK FAIR Executive Committee, with production by SPACE SHOWER ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCING. Official plans specify a ¥1,000 day ticket including tax, with free admission for elementary-school children and younger. Sales are scheduled to begin in March 2027. That is visitor admission, not an exhibitor fee or credit for buying books. Travel can be considered now, but next year’s planned ticket launch is not a sale already in progress.

Why encounter art books and zines in person?

The concept centres on encounters beyond recommendation algorithms: turning pages, asking questions and passing neighbouring tables can reveal publications a reader would not have searched for. That does not make the internet irrelevant. Book size, paper, binding and image sequence simply need a different scale of attention. For readers interested in images, clothing or music, a small publication can also be an introduction to its maker.

Osaka’s context extends the idea beyond the publishing industry. The event identifies art, music, fashion, food, skateboarding, graffiti and nightlife as intersecting cultures, with art books as a point of entry. Talks, workshops, moving images, sound and performances are planned alongside display and sales. These are programme categories, not confirmation that a particular band, designer or shop will attend. Named participants still need official announcements.

A 1918 public hall before the book tables arrive

Completed in 1918, Osaka City Central Public Hall is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property at 1-1-27 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka. Published photographs show its red-brick exterior, the stage and layered seating of the large hall, and the medium hall’s vaulted ceiling and chandeliers. These document the existing architecture, not a completed 2027 fair, and seating counts or room photographs cannot establish stand positions.

Compared with a neutral white exhibition room, the building’s scale and decoration invite awareness of both a small publication held in the hand and a public space accommodating a crowd. That is a relationship to consider, not evidence that the organiser has assigned every room or promised access to every heritage area. Architectural previews should remain distinct from an event floor plan.

Exhibiting and visiting follow different timetables

Creators can check application routes and conditions through the official OSAKA ART BOOK FAIR website during the October 1–November 15, 2026, application period. Visitors should await the planned March ticket release and subsequent programme information. Separating this year’s applications, next year’s sales and the May event makes advance planning more accurate. Debut refers to this particular event, not a claim that Osaka has never hosted another art-book fair.
