The story here isn't about the silhouette — it's about the fabric. PF Flyers has teamed up with Story mfg. on two limited-edition takes on the All-American High-Top, wrapping the canvas high-top that's stayed the same since 1937 in cloth so handmade that "no two pieces will ever be alike."
The brown on the Signature Wobbly Waffle isn't dyed at all — it comes from cotton that grows naturally brown in Thailand, handwoven into the fabric and paired with yarn dyed using natural indigo. Because the entire process is done by hand, every piece of cloth carries its own texture and irregularities. That's not a flaw — it's the point. These shoes are meant to develop character with wear, not just wear out. The other pair, the Signature Indigo Handloom, follows the same logic: fabric dyed in fermented indigo vats using local plants, designed to fade and mold to the wearer over time, according to the brands.
Both fabrics are made by hand by Thai weavers, with weaving and dyeing done in-house rather than on a factory line. The brands are upfront about why textiles like this rarely show up on sneakers in the first place — they're too slow and too inconsistent for standardized production. Pulling it off here took a workshop willing to collaborate, a factory willing to accommodate, and two brands unwilling to cut corners.
"We're honored to partner with Story mfg. to continue PF Flyers' nearly 90-year tradition of crafting canvas sneakers with care," said Kassia Davis, CEO of PF Flyers, in a press release. "Story mfg. is a like-minded partner that doesn't chase trends, but instead practices thoughtful design through handwoven, naturally dyed fabrics." That statement kind of explains why PF Flyers sought out Story mfg. specifically for this collaboration, rather than any random partner — the latter has built a name over thirteen years working with artisans in India and Thailand to produce small-batch, naturally dyed apparel.
The packaging follows the same slow-made logic: the limited editions come in a custom brown box and paper design from Story mfg., along with an off-white dust bag. Both pairs drop online on August 10, with pricing and size range yet to be announced.
