SPEEDCAT was never meant to be romantic. Launched in 2000, it was a low-profile racing shoe built for drivers—low-cut, ground-hugging, always looking ready to hit the gas. Michael Schumacher, then racing for Ferrari, was even seen wearing it off the track. Since its 2020 comeback, the shoe has actually moved faster on the streets than on any racetrack, earning the title of the world's hottest sneaker from fashion site Lyst in 2024. Now PUMA is pushing it toward the opposite extreme—adding satin and a bow to create the SPEEDCAT Etoile.
The low-cut silhouette keeps the same bone structure, but the material shifts to suede paneled with satin, giving it just the right amount of sheen without going overboard. The laces are swapped for ribbon, tied into a bow at the toe—the most obvious nod to ballet flat language on the shoe, and really the only change that needs explaining: the racing shoe's understated sense of speed has been handed off to a bow.
